Question animal care deal’s extension in wake of euthanasia controversy last year
Markham’s contract renewal with an organization that sparked public outcry in the midst of a ringworm outbreak last year will be reassessed. Several animal advocates pleaded with politicians that a two-year contract extension with the Ontario Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals at this time is premature and hasty. “It’s highly inhumane,” said Maureen Flynn of Wingsong Wildlife Preservation Alliance before a town committee Monday. Markham Council Asks Province to Intervene in OSPCA situation
MARKHAM, ON — May 13, 2010 —Markham Council has passed a motion and written to the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) asking them to become involved in recent actions at the York Region branch of the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (OSPCA) shelter in Newmarket.
Markham Council acted after learning, this week, about the potential euthanasia of up to 350 animals at the OSPCA facility due to an uncontrolled outbreak of ringworm (Dermatophytosis).
